Profit & Loss Calculator — Stock Trading P&L Guide

Calculating your exact profit or loss on a stock trade requires more than just subtracting buy from sell price. Brokerage charges, STT, exchange fees and GST all eat into your gross profit. This calculator gives you the complete net P&L picture.

P&L formula for stock trades

What charges reduce your profit?

For equity delivery in India, typical charges on a ₹1 lakh trade include STT (0.1% on buy + sell = ₹200), exchange charges (~₹3), SEBI charges (negligible), GST 18% on brokerage, and stamp duty 0.015% on buy side. At zero-brokerage brokers like Zerodha, total charges on ₹1 lakh delivery round trip ≈ ₹250–300.

For intraday, the charge profile changes: STT drops to 0.025% on sell only, but brokerage applies (flat ₹20 at most discount brokers). Use the Brokerage Calculator for exact breakdowns.

Realized vs unrealized P&L

Unrealized P&L is the profit/loss on positions you still hold — it changes every second as the market moves. Realized P&L is from closed trades. Only realized P&L is taxable. If a stock shows unrealized profit, don't count it until you actually sell.
