FD vs RD — Which is Better?
Fixed Deposit (FD)
Invest a lump sum once. Interest compounds quarterly. Best when you have idle savings. Returns are guaranteed and predictable. Tenure: 7 days to 10 years.
Recurring Deposit (RD)
Invest a fixed amount every month. Ideal for salaried individuals who want to save systematically without a large upfront amount. Tenure: 6 months to 10 years.
FD Interest Formula (Compound)
M = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t) | P = Principal, r = annual rate, n = compounding per year, t = tenure in years
Tax on FD Interest
- Interest is taxable as per income slab
- TDS at 10% if interest > ₹40,000/year (₹50,000 for senior citizens)
- Submit Form 15G (below 60) or 15H (senior citizen) to avoid TDS if income below taxable limit
