Pip Value Calculator — Complete Forex Guide

Before placing any forex trade, you need to know how much each pip is worth in your account currency. Without this, you cannot calculate position size or true risk. Pip value varies with pair, lot size, and current exchange rate.

What is a pip?

A pip is the smallest standard unit of price movement in forex. For most major pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD), one pip = 0.0001 — the 4th decimal place. For JPY pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY), one pip = 0.01 — the 2nd decimal place. Some brokers quote to 5 decimal places; the 5th decimal (0.00001) is a pipette, worth 1/10th of a pip.

Pip value formula

Pip Value = (Pip Size ÷ Exchange Rate) × Lot Size

Example — EUR/USD at 1.0850, standard lot (100,000 units):

Pip Value = (0.0001 ÷ 1.0850) × 100,000 = $9.22 per pip

For USD-quoted pairs, pip value in USD is simply: Pip Size × Lot Size = 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 exactly.

How pip value connects to risk management

If your stop loss is 30 pips on EUR/USD with a standard lot ($10/pip), you risk $300 per trade. To keep risk at 1% of a $30,000 account ($300 max), you can use exactly 1 standard lot. For a $10,000 account (1% = $100 max), your lot size = $100 ÷ (30 × $10) = 0.33 lots → use 0.3 mini lots.
