Frequently Asked Questions

What % of CTC is take-home pay?

For most salaried employees in India, take-home pay is typically 65–80% of CTC. The gap is due to employer PF, gratuity, income tax, and other deductions. Higher earners see a lower percentage due to higher tax rates.

Is PF calculated on gross salary or basic salary?

PF is calculated on basic salary (not gross). The employee contributes 12% of basic salary, capped at ₹15,000 basic (maximum deduction ₹1,800/month). If your basic exceeds ₹15,000, you still pay on the full basic unless your employer caps it.

What states charge professional tax?

States that levy professional tax include Maharashtra (₹200/month), Karnataka (₹200/month), West Bengal (up to ₹200/month), Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Odisha. Delhi, UP, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, J&K do NOT charge professional tax.
