What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services across India, introduced on 1 July 2017. It replaced multiple state and central taxes like VAT, service tax, excise duty, and CST with a single tax structure.

GST Formula

Adding GST: Total = Original Price × (1 + GST% ÷ 100)
Removing GST: Original = Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + GST% ÷ 100)

CGST vs SGST vs IGST

Example: An 18% GST sale within Maharashtra → CGST 9% + SGST 9%. Same sale from Maharashtra to Delhi → IGST 18%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to calculate 18% GST on ₹10,000?

GST Amount = ₹10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800. Total = ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800. CGST = ₹900, SGST = ₹900 (for intrastate).

How to extract GST from an inclusive price?

If you have a GST-inclusive price of ₹11,800 at 18%: Original = 11800 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹10,000. GST = ₹11,800 − ₹10,000 = ₹1,800. Use the "Reverse GST" tab above.

Which GST rate applies to services?

Most services are taxed at 18% GST — IT, consulting, banking, insurance, telecom, professional services. Some services are at 5% (economy transport, small hotels) and 12% (non-AC restaurants, business air travel). Financial services, healthcare, and education are mostly exempt (0%).

Do I need to register for GST?

GST registration is mandatory if your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakhs (goods) or ₹20 lakhs (services). Threshold is ₹10 lakhs for special category states (North-East). Voluntary registration is also allowed.
